b.       This vehicle allows exposure.  We are in the community doing our work every day, across the valley, and we want the community to know it.  We want the community to know that we are there for them, when they need us the most.  In addition to our presence, we want the public to know that businesses, foundations and large contributors are supporting our organizations effort to make a difference and that we care about the needs of the community.

c.   Unfortunately, traffic is now a permanent part of our community and this vehicle will act as a positive message mobile billboard where ever we are seen.  With the facts about suicide and solutions on the sides and back of the vehicle.  At the same time, we will be bringing facts to those that may never otherwise learn them.

What are we trying to accomplish through our organization

Communities are like large families in the sense that in order to have a healthy family we need open and honest communication.  Over time it is easy to not communicate and assume that others are aware of our wants and needs.  This creates isolationism that builds resentments and false beliefs about one another and the gap between its members just continues to increase.  When this happens in a family, sometimes the only solution is to bring in a mediator, to start reestablishing family relations and begin the process of healing.

Las Vegas, as a family, is suffering from not only having poor communication skills between its members, but it is also what would be considered a broken family.  Suicide is just a side effect of a much bigger problem that needs to be addressed, which is a lack of coalescence.  However, by talking about suicide awareness and its prevention and through family support in our community, we are able to do what most organizations have not. Furthermore, we are able to chip away at the barriers by talking about the basic living skills and the need we have to share with each other.  Unfortunately, some members of our family must die before others realize the need we have for each other.  And when this happens, we will be there.

Most psychologists will agree that education is not a one time process and that constant reinforcement is needed to affectively create change in our society.  We have in place mechanisms, community building events that are fun and enjoyable designed to raise the public’s awareness about suicide while encouraging the community to participate by funding, physical support, and volunteerism.

How will an investment in our idea foster the following?

  1. People becoming more engaged and involved.

Public persona at lectures and schools, universities, community colleges, community centers & mass media interviews, encourage interaction with community utilizing the web site and the hotline for follow ups.

  1. People building stronger relationships.

So many people have this SECRET in common-- it is almost a Scarlet Letter for survivors.  Acting much like the AA 12 step program core that dispels BAD in favor of SICK, ISP acts as a locus for identification, and healing by bringing the problem to the light of public awareness. In doing so, the awareness brings about bonding and with bonding comes stronger relationships.

  1. People investing in one another.

Fundraising is based on awareness and ISP brings this dark secret into the light of the community and allows crosspollination of ideas and resources for those who consider life ending and those who are affected by suicide. Critical mass is achieved by directing energy and resources into a single effort, ISP allows for both prevention as well as recovery through the common experience of interested parties.

  1. People reaching across their own boundaries and interests.

Here the ISP acts to IDENTIFY a hidden boundary--life ending acts and those who are affected. Unlike maladies that require long-term medical treatments and research, life ending acts may come about almost instantly without awareness of the signs that precipitate it. Those who are survivors have no common entity wherein to express and to develop prevention and recovery therapies. ESPECIALLY of importance is the fact that this one human action (suicide) crosses all borders of religion, race, creed, and nationality--it is truly a universal phenomenon albeit affiliated with depression.

We encourage people to cross their own boundaries by holding events with activities of interest to the general public, such as free barbeques, petitions for a new Nevada license plate, holiday community dinners, gulf tournaments, concerts, campaigns and volunteerism.  These events allow people to relate with others on common ground wherein as one becomes open to new ideas and concepts-open to learning from on another.

  1. People growing a shared sense of responsibility and interests.

Without a doubt bringing the Awareness of ISP and the Universal condition to the forefront of modern social discourse is a responsibility of enlightened society. But as most effective areas of social change, ISP needs to begin with grassroots public relations and GROW its community of supporters. The Internet, TV, Radio and Documentary film are planned as methods of reaching the GLOBAL ISP community and allowing INTERACTION--from interaction grows interest -- from interest comes awareness followed by self determined responsibility.

We have future plans for a documentary film, national campaigns, etc. that will be presented by ISP through other funding sources and organizations.

What have we learned?

We have learned that no other organization has impacted those that it has addressed more than ours when concerning suicide awareness, its prevention and family support.  We have numerous letters of appreciation and recommendation from those that we have taught classes, workshops and lectures to praising our unique, interesting, and educational services.  We are always amazed at the positive response from our audiences.  This is what encourages us to continue our needed and valuable work.

Providing for those that have lost a loved one to a suicide is, and must be, a community effort.  Feelings associated with losing a loved one to a suicide are guilt, anger, shame, and depression with a need to isolate.  With community awareness and communication, we can break the walls of isolation and stop the chain of suicide.  It is not only our obligation to financially support these families, but we must come together as a community of compassion through awareness, as their world will never be the same again.

When reflecting upon ISP’s past accomplishments, we have realized we have influenced our community considerably with such little resources and with hard work.

Sincerely,

Matthew Dovel
President of ISP
